BOUNTIFUL — 500 South in Bountiful was closed Wednesday between 400 East to 800 East while crews repair a large gas leak.

Bountiful's water department was repairing a water leak when workers "inadvertently hit the gas line," said South Davis Metro Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Larsen.

The damaged line was a large 4-inch feeder line, according to Jorgan Hofeling, Enbridge Gas Company spokesperson.

Crews had to dig in multiple areas, dealing with water from the other water issue, to stop the leak just after 9 a.m., Larson said. Nearby office workers were initially evacuated.

Larsen said the road remains shut down for repairs, which may last until later in the afternoon.
