SALT LAKE CITY — In a hostile environment — even if half the stadium was Utes fans — Utah freshman quarterback Isaac Wilson got the job done in his first career start.
The former Corner Canyon star got into a rhythm and helped Utah to 25 unanswered points in the middle quarters to rally past a Utah State team that came out aggressive and controlled an early 14-3 lead over its in-state rival.
In the end, Utah earned a double-digit win on the road and gave its freshman quarterback good, live reps to help his progression as the potential future signal caller of the team in the coming years.
The win also allowed the Utes to stay at No 12 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 rankings that were release Sunday afternoon. As such, Utah remains the top-ranked team in the Big 12, but No. 13 Kansas State and No. 14 Oklahoma State are nipping at the former Pac-12 team's heels.
Outside of those three teams, No. 20 Iowa State remains the only other team ranked in the Big 12 after Arizona dropped out of the rankings. Arizona, Arizona State, BYU and UCF each received votes.
Texas claimed the No. 1 spot this week, jumping Georgia for the first time this season with 35 first-place votes. The Bulldogs dropped to No. 2 and received 23 first-place votes. Behind Georgia is No. 3 Ohio State (5 first-place votes), No. 4 Alabama and No. 5 Ole Miss.
