WELLINGTON, Carbon County — A Uintah County driver accused of fleeing state troopers after a traffic stop crashed and died Wednesday afternoon.
Around 2:30 p.m., troopers stopped a vehicle east of Wellington in Carbon County on U.S. 6 and had begun a DUI investigation when the driver fled, Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cameron Roden said.
Troopers attempted to spike the tires of the fleeing vehicle but were unsuccessful. The car continued east on U.S. 6 before the driver lost control and crashed about 14 miles later, Roden said.
The driver was ejected in the crash and pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified Thursday as a 39-year-old man from Fort Duchesne, Uintah County, but his name has not yet been released.
The Utah Department of Transportation said the crash forced the closure of U.S. 6 for a short time while emergency personnel responded.
