CEDAR CITY — Approximately 60 people gathered at the "C" Overlook southeast of Cedar City on Sunday afternoon to watch as two Swainson's hawks were released into the wild.
Martin Tyner, founder and CEO of Enoch Wildlife Rescue, said the birds will soon be making their way to South America.
"They're heading for Argentina," he said. "That's where they like to spend their winters."
Tyner said some years ago, he once saw a flock of 300-400 Swainson's hawks gather in Iron County as they prepared to leave for their annual migration.
"The next morning, there was not a one in sight," he said. "They're hard-wired to go to Argentina. This is not a learned behavior. It is just something instinctive to them. And off they go."
