PRICE — Authorities on Monday identified a man shot and killed by police in Carbon County last week and released a few more details about what led up to the shooting.

At 11:36 p.m. on July 30, officers from Price, Helper, and the Carbon County Sheriff's Office were called to a domestic violence incident just outside Price city limits.

"During their investigation, officers discovered that an involved male party had left the residence, and his location was unknown. It was also determined that he was potentially armed," the Utah Department of Public Safety said in a news release..

The man, identified as Patrick Frank Whitten, 31, of Price, was found "hiding in an outdoor location near the residence," police said.

"When officers confronted him, he brandished a weapon. In response to this threat, officers from multiple agencies fired," according to the news release.

The Utah Department of Public Safety did not disclose what kind of weapon the man brandished. The statement also did not say how many shots were fired or how many officers fired, or even where the shooting occurred, except to say "near Price."

Whitten sustained critical injuries and was treated on scene and then taken to an area hospital, police said. He later died at the hospital.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The Utah State Bureau of Investigation is still investigating the shooting.
