SYRACUSE — Antelope Island State Park has reopened a day after a grass fire scorched about 59 acres of land near its entrance.
Park officials reopened the park shortly after 9 a.m., asking visitors to slow down because fire crews remained on scene to keep tabs on the fire. No other updates were provided.
The fire started shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday, closing the park. Its visitor center was evacuated but was never threatened by the fire.
The fire was 100% contained at 59 acres Tuesday night, according to Kelly Wickens, a spokeswoman for the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands.
Davis County sheriff's spokeswoman Stephanie Dinsmore said several different agencies responded to the grass fire. The cause of the fire is being investigated, but it is believed to have been human-caused.
Crews will continue to monitor the area for the next few days.
State firefighters issued Stage 2 fire restrictions for Antelope Island last week over wildfire concerns. The order bans anyone from "building, maintaining, attending or using any fire, campfire or stove fire" at the park, while other restrictions were in place aimed at preventing a wildfire.
Tuesday's blaze was sparked nearly eight years to the day an even larger wildfire broke out on the island. The 2016 fire scorched close to 14,000 acres near the historic Fielding Garr Ranch before it was contained.
