TAYLORSVILLE — A 18-year-old man was arrested Saturday by police for investigation of raping and kidnapping a 13-year-old girl and then running over her brother.

The parents of the girl told Taylorsville police that Joseph Genovez had their daughter in a vehicle Saturday; despite their pleas, he refused to let the girl out and then drove over the girl's older brother with the vehicle, according to a police affidavit.

The brother was transported to a hospital for treatment, and then taken to a larger hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

Taken into custody

Genovez was later arrested in West Valley City by West Valley police. After being read his Miranda rights, Genovez said he knew the girl was underage, but admitted to having an inappropriate sexual relationship with the girl for two to three weeks, the affidavit states.

Genovez later told police he had been returning the girl home from the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns. When he arrived at the home, the girl's family met him outside. He told police that instead of letting the girl out of the vehicle, he was scared and decided to flee the scene. Genovez acknowledged that he had run over an individual with his vehicle, but feared the male victim had a weapon, according to the police affidavit. Police say the brother only had a cellphone on him at the time.

Genovez was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of rape of a child; aggravated assault; child kidnapping; and failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving a serious injury.
