SOUTH JORDAN — The brother of a man shot and killed by police over the weekend says his brother had been suffering from mental health issues.
"Our family woke up June 15 to the devastating news that our brother had been shot and killed by the South Jordan police. No parent or sibling should have to endure this type of situation. We are grieving the loss of our beloved brother; our brother was facing challenging mental health issues. At this time, we are asking for privacy while we grieve and wait for information to understand exactly what happened so we can begin healing," the man's brother said in a statement to KSL.
Neither the family nor police have publicly identified him as of Monday.
The police shooting on Saturday started when South Jordan officers responded to a report of a suspicious person looking into car windows near Skye Park, in the area of 4800 West and 9600 South. When officers spotted the man and approached him near Glenmoor Field, about a half-mile east of the park, he pulled out a knife, according to police.
"The subject was uncooperative as officers spoke with them and less-lethal force was used in an attempt to disarm and detain them. After multiple attempts to gain compliance were ineffective, the subject advanced on officers with the knife and was shot," police said.
The man was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries.
An officer-involved critical incident team is investigating the incident and the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, South Jordan police said.
