LOGAN — Construction on a roundabout near the corner of the Logan City Cemetery on Friday led to the discovery of human skeletal remains, police said.
Logan Police Department Assistant Chief Curtis Hooley said crews were moving utilities to get the roadway ready when they made the discovery. State anthropologists exhumed the remains, and police are currently working with them to learn more.
While nothing is confirmed, Hooley said early indications point to the remains being very old and possibly belonging to a white male. He added there are rumors going around the remains could belong to a man who was killed in the 1800s.
"He actually was arrested and placed into the Cache County Jail, I believe, and this mob took him out of there and ended up, ultimately, hanging him ... in front of the old courthouse, or at least in that area," Hooley said. "Supposedly, they wouldn't allow him to be buried inside the cemetery, so they placed him just outside."
Hooley said the department has received information about the rumor, including that the old sextons — people in charge of a cemetery — heard the man was buried in that area of the cemetery, but they didn't know exactly where.
"That's exactly where this skeletal remains was located," Hooley said.
Rumors aside, next steps involve more examination and analysis from state anthropologists to gather more information on an approximate height, estimated weight and, most importantly, the age of the person, "so we know for sure that it's somebody from the 1800s, but it is very obviously a very old skeletal remains," he added.
