HUNTSVILLE, Weber County — Two men were seriously hurt Sunday evening when the roof of a cabin they were building in remote Weber County collapsed, firefighters said.

Crews were dispatched to the area at Oak Canyon Road on the way to Monte Cristo just before 6:30 p.m. It took them 27 minutes to get there due to the rough roads that are difficult for fire engines to navigate, said Weber County Fire Marshal David Reed.

The county owns two four-wheel drive engines, he said, which allowed responders to make it up the road.

Two men, one in his 30s and one in his 50s, were injured when the roof collapsed. The man in his 30s fell off the roof, while the man in his 50s fell through the roof and sustained head, chest and abdominal injuries, the fire marshal said.

Three families were at the scene before first responders arrived and helped keep the structure from collapsing further. After crews arrived, they stabilized the structure so they could rescue the man who had fallen through the roof.

Two medical helicopters flew the men to hospitals, where they were in serious condition, Reed said.
