Here's who is running for statewide office in Utah in 2024

SALT LAKE CITY — November is 11 months away, but election season in Utah is already well underway with the window to file as a candidate closing Monday at 5 p.m.

Interest in the state's high-profile election for Mitt Romney's Senate seat has been building since the first-term Republican announced in September that he would not seek another term, and several well-known candidates have jumped into the ring.

Gov. Spencer Cox also faces challengers from within his own party, and the race for attorney general is wide open with Sean Reyes not running again.

Below is a list of candidates who have filed to run for federal and state office in 2024, according to the latest report from the lieutenant governor's office. Incumbents are marked with an asterisk.

Federal offices

U.S. Senate

  • Carlton E. Bowen, Independent American.
  • Rep. John Curtis, Republican, currently represents Utah's 3rd District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
  • Brent Orrin Hatch, Republican, is a lawyer, former associate White House counsel to President George H.W. Bush and a law clerk to former Judge Robert H. Bork; he is the son of the late Sen. Orrin Hatch.
  • Caroline Gleich, Democrat, is a mountaineer, endurance athlete and activist.
  • Brad Wilson, Republican, was the Utah Speaker of the House before resigning in September to run for Senate.
  • Carolyn Phippen, Republican, is a former legislative staffer and current executive director of Freedom Front of Utah.
  • Robert Newcomb, Independent American.
  • Josh Randall, Republican, is an accountant and Utah Trust Lands Administration audit manager.
  • Trent Staggs, Republican, is the mayor of Riverton.
  • Chandler H. Tanner, Republican, is a self-proclaimed "father, husband and businessman with small-town roots and big-time experience," according to his X profile.
  • Clark S. White, Republican.
  • Archie A Williams III, Democrat, is a former Orem City Council candidate.

U.S. House District 1

  • Bill Campbell, Democrat.
  • Daniel R. Cottam, Libertarian, is a bariatric surgeon who ran for Utah House District 20 in 2022.
  • Derek L. Draper, Republican.
  • Paul Stuart Miller, Republican, is an electrical foreman who, according to his website, wants to reduce inflation and decrease taxes for the middle and lower classes.
  • Rep. Blake Moore, Republican, was elected to represent District 1 in 2020.*

U.S. House District 2

  • Brian Adams, Democrat.
  • Cassie Easley, Constitution, previously ran against Rep. Chris Stewart for the 2nd District seat.
  • Colby C. Jenkins, Republican, is a combat veteran, a member of the U.S. Army Reserve and a former counterterrorism policy adviser to the Secretary of Defense.
  • Ty Jensen, Republican, ran against Sen. Mike Lee in 2022.
  • Rep. Celeste Maloy, Republican, won a special election in November 2023 to replace her former boss, Stewart.

U.S. House District 3

  • Rod Bird Jr., Republican, the mayor of Roosevelt, initially filed to run for Romney's Senate seat before switching to the House race.
  • Kathryn W. Dahlin, Republican, is a former legislative aide in the U.S. Senate, and Republican state delegate.
  • John Dougall, Republican, has served as the state auditor since 2013 and for 10 years prior was a state representative.
  • Chris Herrod, Republican, ran against Curtis in a special election in 2017 and challenged him again in 2018 and 2022, winning the state Republican Party's convention nomination both times but losing to Curtis in the primary.
  • Clayton B. Hunsaker, Republican.
  • Mike Kennedy, Republican, a doctor and state senator from Alpine, ran against Romney in 2018.
  • Case Lawrence, Republican, is an entrepreneur and former CEO of CircusTrix.
  • Stewart Peay, Republican, is a veteran and former candidate for state GOP chairman in 2021.
  • Glenn J. Wright, Democrat, ran against Curtis in 2022.
  • Zac Wilson, Republican, associate at a private equity firm and Salt Lake County chairman of the Utah Young Republicans, according to the Salt Lake County GOP.

U.S. House District 4

State offices

Governor

  • Gov. Spencer Cox, Republican, was sworn in as governor of Utah in 2021.*
  • Carson Jorgensen, Republican, is a former state Republican Party chairman and congressional candidate.
  • Brian Smith King, Democrat, is a former Utah House minority leader and eight-term lawmaker.
  • J. Robert Latham, Libertarian, is a lawyer and University of Utah graduate.
  • Phil Lyman, Republican, is a state representative from Blanding.
  • Scott Robbins, Republican.
  • Tom Tomeny, unaffiliated, is running his campaign with a focus to "get money out of politics," according to his website.

Attorney general

  • Rudy J Bautista, Democrat, is a private criminal defense attorney.
  • Derek Brown, Republican, is an attorney, former Utah GOP chairman, former state lawmaker and congressional staffer.
  • Trent E. Christensen, Republican, previously ran for Utah's 4th Congressional District in 2020.
  • David Carlson, Democrat, was the assistant attorney general and city attorney for North Ogden and South Salt Lake.
  • W. Andrew McCullough, Libertarian, previously ran for Utah attorney general in 2016.
  • Frank Demcy Mylar, Republican.
  • Rachel Terry, Republican, is the current Utah Division of Risk Management director and former Utah assistant attorney general.
  • Michelle Quist, United Utah, is a lawyer, former clerk on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals and former dean of admissions at BYU Law School.

State auditor

  • Ricky Hatch, Republican, is a Weber County clerk/auditor who lobbies the Utah Legislature on behalf of the state's county clerks and auditors.
  • Catherine Voutaz, Democrat, is a suicide prevention advocate.
  • Tina Cannon, Republican, is an accountant and former congressional candidate for Utah's 1st District.

State treasurer

  • Marlo Oaks, Republican, was appointed state treasurer in 2021 to fill a vacancy and won reelection in 2022.*
  • Neil A. Hansen, Democrat, is a former state representative from Ogden who has previously run for state treasurer, governor and mayor of Ogden.

State School Board District 13

  • Randy Boothe, Republican, is serving in this role currently and previously served 16 years on Nebo School Board.*
  • Scott Brandon Neilson, Republican, was a member of the board in 2017 to 2021 and ran for the 7th District state Senate seat in 2020.
  • Alyson Oldham Robertson, Republican.

State School Board District 12

  • James Rex Moss, Republican, has been a member of the board since 2021.*

State School Board District 10

  • Matt Hymas, Republican, was elected to the board in 2020 and is the executive director of Excelsior Academy.*
  • Deborah L. Gatrell, Democrat, is an adjunct faculty instructor at Salt Lake Community College and a high school social studies teacher in Granite School District.
  • Monica Bangerter Wilbur, Republican, has partnered with board member Natalie Cline to run Higher Ground, an organization that claims the public school system is "out of control."

State School Board District 15

  • Kristan L. Norton, Republican, was elected to the board in 2020.*
  • Joann Brinton, Republican.

State School Board District 3

  • Brent Strate, Republican, was elected to the board in 2020. He was a middle and high school teacher for 30 years and served as a South Ogden City councilman.*
  • Rod Hall, Republican.
  • Laura Johnson, Utah Forward.

State School Board District 6

  • Carol Barlow Lear, Democrat, is a teacher, attorney and has been a member of the board since 2016.*

State School Board District 7

  • Molly L Hart, Republican, has worked in education for more than 20 years and has been a board member since 2020.*
  • John Arthur, Democrat, is a 6th grade teacher who won Utah Teacher of the Year in 2021 and was a finalist for National Teacher of the Year.

State School Board District 9

  • Natalie J. Cline, Republican, was elected to the board in 2020, is from Bluffdale and runs Higher Ground with Monica Wilbur.*
  • Amanda B Bollinger, Republican.
  • Will Shiflett, Democrat.
