SALT LAKE CITY — Police arrested a 33-year-old man who was reported to have a firearm inside a high-rise apartment complex in Sugar House on Sunday afternoon.
Officers in the area responded to an alert about an alleged disturbance inside the Sugarmont Apartment building around noon. Residents of the apartment complex reported hearing a gunshot from an upper floor.
According to a press release from the police department, the officers called for backup, dismissed people in the area, directed residents to shelter in place and set up a safety zone outside the complex near 2100 S. McClelland Street. The shots were believed to have come from an upper floor with easy view of and access to the Fairmont Aquatic Center next door, according to police.
Our officers are working quickly but safely to secure a scene and to confirm the public is safe at the Sugarmont Apartments in Sugar House. We are asking people to avoid the area including the nearby parks.

The officers located the apartment believed to contain the man with a gun, and tried to communicate with the man. They learned that the man had pointed the gun at at least one person, leading police to label the incident an aggravated assault, though an investigation is ongoing, according to police.
The man then exited the apartment, still holding a gun, the release states. Officers immediately ordered the man to drop the weapon and took the man into custody, seized his gun and did a sweep to make sure the unit was empty, police said. No one was harmed during either the incident or the arrest.
Detectives are working to obtain a search warrant to check for evidence of a discharged weapon, as well as any other firearms inside the apartment.
"This was a very dynamic situation that presented numerous challenges and I'm proud of the women and men of the Salt Lake City Police Department," Salt Lake City police Chief Mike Brown said. "They handled this call with incredible professionalism. This type of situation puts our officers under enormous stress, but they are highly trained. Today, like they do every day, our officers relied on their training and experience to safely resolve this incident to ensure the community outside and those living inside the apartment dwelling remained safe."
The shelter-in-place orders and street closures ended at 1:13 p.m. Sunday.
The man was booked at the Salt Lake County Jail, though, his name was not yet released.
