TAYLORSVILLE — Google Fiber is on its way to yet another Utah town, this time in Taylorsville. It will be the first city on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley to get the service.
"We are thrilled to announce a game-changing partnership," Mayor Kristie Overson said in a statement on Thursday.
The city council passed a resolution Wednesday to grant Google Fiber a non-exclusive license from the city to install and manage its fiber optic infrastructure to expand broadband internet service.
"Access to fast, reliable internet service is necessary for life in the 21st century, and Google Fiber is working to connect more residents along the Wasatch Front to work, school and each other by providing reliable, great internet and customer service," said Jacob Brace, government and community affairs manager for Google Fiber Utah.
The company will install the cables, which will allow residents and businesses access to some of the fastest internet speeds available; fiber internet is much faster than its cable internet alternative.
In January, South Salt Lake announced a partnership with the tech giant as well, bringing the total number of cities across the Wasatch Front with the service to five, including Provo, Salt Lake City and Millcreek.
"Now with Google Fiber, we'll be more connected than ever," Overson said. "We know cutting-edge technology is essential to our community, and we are driven to provide the best possible options. It's important that we as a city plan for a high-tech future and offer a digital bridge."
