Health care in the United States is seeing more demand than ever, making the need for well-educated nurses stronger than ever. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of registered nurses is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations over the next decade, with thousands of job openings expected each year as the workforce expands and experienced nurses retire.

With this growing need, universities are expanding and introducing new flexible learning opportunities for working nursing professionals.

One such program, Utah Tech University's online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program is designed to help registered nurses build leadership, teaching and administrative skills while continuing to work in the field.

The program empowers nurses who already hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and an active RN license to pursue graduate-level education through a fully online, asynchronous format that fits the realities of modern health care careers.

Designed for working nurses

Nursing jobs aren't exactly known for their consistent hours.

Utah Tech's MSN program was built specifically for nurses who want to advance their careers without leaving their jobs or relocating.

All coursework is delivered online and asynchronously, allowing students to access lectures, assignments, and discussions at times that fit their work schedules.

Nurses can complete the entire program — including practica and a final capstone project — without disrupting their professional commitments or moving to the university's campus.

"The Utah Tech MSN program is designed for working professionals who want to advance their careers without putting life on hold," said Dr. Vicki Welch, MSN program director. "Because it's online you learn when it's convenient for you, and along with normal classroom work, the program includes three unique experiences—one in education, one in leadership, and a final capstone project tailored to your professional goals. It's an affordable, flexible program with expert faculty and real-world learning, all designed to support your goals and your life."

Students may attend part-time or full-time depending on their schedules and career goals.

A curriculum focused on leadership, education and practice

The MSN program includes 36 credits spread across 14 graduate-level courses.

Classes run in 12-week semesters, allowing students to progress through the program in manageable segments while balancing work and personal responsibilities.

In addition to coursework, the program includes experiential learning through three major components: an education practicum, a leadership experience and a capstone project tailored to students' professional interests.

These elements allow nurses to apply evidence-based practices and leadership strategies in real clinical or educational environments. The capstone project gives students the opportunity to address real challenges in health care organizations or nursing education programs.

Graduates are prepared for roles in nursing leadership, health care management and nursing education, as well as further academic study.

Opportunities for specialization

In addition to the full MSN degree, Utah Tech offers post-graduate certificates in Nursing Education and Healthcare Administration.

These certificates allow nurses to deepen their expertise in specialized areas of practice.

The Nursing Education certificate focuses on preparing nurses to teach in academic or clinical settings, while the Healthcare Administration certificate emphasizes leadership and management skills within health systems.

Both pathways support nurses seeking expanded roles in hospitals, clinics, universities or health care organizations.

Affordable graduate education

Cost is a significant factor for many nurses considering advanced degrees. Utah Tech officials say the program was designed to keep tuition and educational materials affordable.

Tuition is $383 per credit hour, and the program incorporates Open Educational Resources (OER) to reduce or eliminate textbook costs for many courses.

These resources allow students to access academic materials digitally at little or no cost, helping nurses pursue graduate education without accumulating substantial additional debt.

Accredited and career-focused

Utah Tech's MSN program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), ensuring that the curriculum meets national standards for nursing education and professional preparation.

For many nurses, the program offers both academic growth and personal transformation.

Leah Meng, a member of Utah Tech's Class of 2026, said the program broadened her understanding of nursing education and opened new career possibilities.

"I chose the MSN program at Utah Tech for its online format, flexible schedule, and excellent educators," Meng said. "Before starting the program, I enjoyed teaching nursing students in the clinical setting, but I was unaware of all the thought and effort that went into nursing education. I 'didn't know what I didn't know,' but I learned."

Meeting the needs of a changing workforce

Across the United States, health care leaders are working to address shortages of trained nursing professionals and prepare a new generation of leaders in the field.

The Health Resources and Services Administration projects that workforce shortages will continue to affect nursing in many regions of the country, particularly in rural areas where demand for health professionals often exceeds supply.

Programs that expand access to graduate education can help address these workforce challenges by preparing nurses for leadership and teaching roles, which are essential to training future nurses and strengthening health care systems.

Preparing the next generation of nursing leaders

As health care continues to evolve, advanced education is becoming increasingly important for nurses seeking to expand their impact.

For working nurses ready to advance their careers, the ability to complete a graduate degree online — without stepping away from their profession — offers a practical pathway toward professional growth and leadership in the health care field. For more information on the program, visit Utah Tech.
