SANDY — In a little under a year, a newly renovated recreation center is expected to open in Sandy.
Crews broke ground on the new facility in early November. It will replace the 41-year-old Alta Canyon Sports Center, which was demolished two months prior.
The modernized facility will include a new gymnasium, pickleball courts, expanded programming space for classes, cardio and strength equipment, an indoor track, and amenities for everyone, as well as a community room that can be used for a variety of purposes, according to the city's website.
However, Sandy will preserve the popular outdoor pool from the previous sports center, which will open after the new facility is completed.
While construction is underway, the city is asking residents to provide input on the name of the new community and recreation center.
In a video posted to her Facebook page, standing near the construction site, Sandy Mayor Monica Zoltanski encourages citizens to give their feedback on what the reconstructed recreation center should be called.
"This new rec center that's being built; wow, it's going to transform recreation in Sandy," she said. "So let's give it a name that reflects its Sandy spirit, its location, its beauty — and we welcome your feedback for all of it."
Residents can take part in a survey that lists several choices for the new facility, including its original name of Alta Canyon Sports Center; there is also an option for people to submit their own idea.
Input from the survey will be shared with the mayor and the Sandy City Council, which will make the final call on the center's new name.
The $23.5 million facility is being funded by the city of Sandy, along with a donation of $2 million from the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation and a $3 million tourism and recreation grant from Salt Lake County, according to a November news release issued by the city.
Construction of the new facility is set to persist through the remainder of 2026; the newly reconstructed recreation center is anticipated to open in January 2027, according to Sandy officials.
Once completed, the new recreation center is projected to serve over 59,000 residents.
