SALT LAKE CITY — Senior day didn't go as planned for Utah women's soccer Sunday afternoon.
The home team suffered a 2-0 loss to Kansas at Ute Field in Salt Lake City.
A late controversial call set up a penalty kick for Kansas to give the visitors the first goal of the game in the 75th minute. Video replay confirmed there was a handball foul on Utah, which set up the Jayhawks for a penalty kick and a 1-0 lead late in the game.
"What's really disappointing is that every video replay has gone against us this year; that was a game-changing call," head coach Hideki Nakada said. "I think that whoever scored first was probably going to win that game and that call really ended it."
Next up for the Utes will be what Nakada considers the team's actual senior game, a home matchup against BYU the night before Halloween (Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. MDT).
"I think it would be really awesome to send the seniors out with a win over BYU," Kelly Bullock said. "This season there were a lot of highs, but a lot of lows, too. We just have to remember the highs; it's a great group and I love these girls."
The Utah women's soccer team team has nine seniors, including Erin Gibbs, Brooklyn Blaylock, Alex Schiebstadt, Devi Dudley, Kelly Bullock, Grace Watkins, Ava Hetzel, Ryann Cull, and Alie Swenson.
"Our team's always been young ever since I've been here. Because of the nature of today's game with the transfer portal, we made a lot of changes in the first few years," Nakada said. "This is the first time we've been able to have some experience. This senior class has been awesome, helping this program grow. They've changed the culture of this team and we're going to miss them."
