GERMANY — Just as there are "senior superlatives" at a high school, there are also superlatives in the animal kingdom. They aren't things like "most likely to succeed" or "cutest class couple." Instead, there's the "highest jumper" or "most likely to grow a 10-foot tusk."
One of the candidates for "smallest but mightiest" has to be an ant. You've probably seen ants carry large crumbs, leaves and dead bugs. Even though the things they're usually hauling are small compared to what we can carry, it's easy to see just how powerful these tiny insects are.
But what if an ant drags something around that's closer in scale to our size? That's seriously impressive.
Check out this little video.
Perhaps this ant is a particularly tough specimen. But I'm willing to guess that there are lots of ants capable of such incredible feats of strength.
Some people who watch this video might think that feathers are light, so it's not that big of a deal for an ant to drag one around. But think of the proportions here. The feather's shaft alone is bigger than the ant, so it's amazing it can even grab hold of it. Let's just give this mighty bug the credit it deserves.
