FRANCE – There are lots of runners in my family, but we're not a footrace family. What does that mean? Being part of a running family means I have numerous loved ones who compete in various running events. They find personal fulfillment in the sport and have excelled at all levels of competition.

But never has one of my brothers or aunts or cousins boisterously interrupted a family reunion to challenge someone else to a footrace.

One of my childhood friends, however, came from an intense footrace family. They'd all be sitting at the dinner table one minute, enjoying pasta and salad, and then the next minute they'd be out on the curb to watch the dad take on one of the sons in a race.

The dad loved wearing cargo pants and penny loafers, so he was never dressed for the occasion. And the son might have been wearing boots or be barefoot. It really didn't matter. They were still going to point out some distant object, agree that it was the end point, and then sprint down the street with reckless abandon.

Footraces can be spontaneous and undeniably fun. But they can also be hazardous.

Check out the unfortunate series of events in this video.

Yikes! That situation sure escalated quickly. So let that be a lesson to all of us. If you're going to take on someone in a spontaneous footrace, make sure you're properly dressed in cargo pants and penny loafers and there aren't any hazardous street signs nearby.
