LOGAN — Utah State head coach Jerrod Calhoun isn't even done with his first season coaching the men's basketball team and he's already talking about a contract extension.
When asked about his long-term plans as the coach of the Aggies, Calhoun confronted the question head on and gave fans something to look forward to for potentially a very long time,
"We're in the process of trying to work out a long-term deal right now, to be honest," Calhoun said Saturday night after Utah State beat San Diego State.
In Calhoun's first season, the Aggies are 24-4 overall and have a good chance of qualifying to the NCAA Tournament. Calhoun said that after the team won its first 10 games, he and athletic director Diana Sabau had a conversation about his future.
"Her and I have been on the same page since Day 1," Calhoun said. "I've been amazed with the process from getting here — from the interview process to now. ... We've had great conversations."
Calhoun said he feels like the team can be just as good next season, even though it will be losing Ian Martinez, Dexter Akanno and Aubin Gateretse.
The Aggies have had four different coaches over the last five years. Craig Smith left in 2021, Ryan Odom replaced Smith and was at Utah State for two years before leaving. The school then hired Danny Sprinkle, who coached in 2024 and left after one season.
Earlier this month, Utah State president Elizabeth Cantwell announced she was leaving for a job the University of Washington.
