OREM — After 310 days of a title defense, Hillcrest High's drill team succeeded late Friday night in the finals of the 4A state drill competition at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley University.
Hillcrest placed first in military, second in dance and finished off the event with a Mad Hatter-inspired first-place show category to hold off Ridgeline for a ninth state title in program history and second in as many years.
"It was the most incredible season," said Hillcrest coach Chelsea Divine, whose team had won the show category for only the third time all season. "We had the most amazing team, and they work so hard every single day.
"We've figured that we've been a team for 310 days today, and they worked so hard, gave it their all every single day, and today was the greatest day ever."
The Riverhawks finished first in dance, but slipped to fourth in show for the runner-up spot overall. West Field, Desert Hills and Snow Canyon rounded out the top five.
