HURRICANE, Washington County — One man is dead after a horseback-riding accident Thursday.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office received a call shortly after 8 a.m. for a "traumatic injury" at the Washington County Legacy Park, the county's fairgrounds.

Washington County sheriff's deputy Joel Hafoka said the victim was a 48-year-old who had been riding a horse on the racetrack. With no events taking place at the site, Hafoka said the man was likely just practicing riding.

Police are still investigating what happened, but Hafoka said it seems like something spooked the horse, causing it to go through a PVC-pipe guardrail, causing the man to fall off the horse.

Medics attempted to perform lifesaving measures upon arrival, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

At this time, police aren't sure if the horse potentially landed on or trampled the man or if he had other injuries, but the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner is working to determine the man's cause of death.

The man's identity has not been released.
