MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE, Weber County — Site work has started at the location of a planned new state liquor store in Marriott-Slaterville, which will be the fifth in Weber County.
"The next step will be pouring the building footings," said Michelle Schmitt, spokeswoman for the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services, which operates Utah's state-owned liquor stores. The work started Nov. 7, and the $9 million project should be complete by the fall of 2025.
As is, two Utah State Liquor Stores operate in Ogden, with one each in Harrisville and Roy. A department analysis of population growth and demand led to the decision to build what will be the fifth store for Weber County at 1115 W. 12th Street in Marriott-Slaterville.
"Marriott-Slaterville was selected as part of the Ogden market area, which was determined as a high-need area, to service the public and to help rightsize demand on other nearby existing stores," Schmitt said. Plans are in the works to build a new store to replace the outlet in Roy, which opened in 1993, but she said no timeline for the project has yet been set.
Many years ago, farm homes sat along 12th Street in the area of the planned new liquor store. Now, it is a busy corridor and home to numerous commercial outlets, though the site where the new liquor store is taking shape had sat vacant for 10 or more years, according to Marriott-Slaterville city attorney Bill Morris.
The new store, when complete, will measure 12,500 square feet, larger than the other Weber County stores but smaller than the two newest stores in Salt Lake City and Sandy, which measure 14,500 square feet and 14,000 square feet, respectively. The 12th Street location, west of Ogden, sits near IRS facilities, an IFA Country Store and numerous other chain outlets.
Like other new stores built by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services, the Marriott-Slaterville outlet will have refrigerator space to sell chilled products and a "Proudly Utah" section featuring products made in the state. A mural inside will feature Ben Lomond Peak, according to Morris, who helped in the artist-selection process. State lawmakers approved construction of the new store in 2023.
Utah's state-owned liquor and wine stores, numbering more than 50, generated $578.9 million in sales in fiscal year 2024, which ended June 30, according to the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services. Money helps fund "road and transportation, public health, education and public safety. Funding is also dedicated for the state's free and reduced school lunch program, programming to reduce underage drinking and alcohol-related law enforcement work," Schmitt said.
