ST. GEORGE — A Springdale, Washington County, fundraiser seeks to ease the medical and travel costs for a Hurricane family following their 15-year-old son's brain cancer diagnosis.

The fundraiser, set for Dec. 2 at Zion Pizza & Noodle Co., will support Gianni Giammalva, a baseball-loving Hurricane High School student battling brain cancer.

Attendees can order as usual from 4-9 p.m. or until the food runs out and will be invited to contribute donations toward Gianni's medical and travel expenses. Organizers say 100% of sales will go to the family.

"The community really has been so amazing," said Gianni's mother, Linsey Johansen. "I've always realized we are a small-town community, but being in this situation has just opened my eyes so much to how lucky we are to live here. All the reaching out and help has been overwhelmingly amazing."

Right before the season closes each year, Zion Pizza & Noodle Co. owners Josh and Zabrina Vanderwerff host a year-end fundraiser. Food is offered on a name-your-own-price basis, with all proceeds donated to a family in need or a local charity. The event also helps ensure that any leftover food is put to good use instead of going to waste.
