THE POCONOS — I spent six months or so living in the Pocono Mountains region of Pennsylvania, and it's easily one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. We saw lots of different animals there, including opossums, raccoons and even a bobcat.
But of all the animals we encountered, the black bears were my favorite. I once saw a family of bears crossing the road. The mama went first, followed by three cubs. They ambled along in such a relaxed way, totally unfazed by my car.
We always kept our distance from the bears, trying to respect their space and keep ourselves safe. So it's interesting to see in this video what happens when a cat comes face-to-face with a bear. When I say "cat," I'm not talking about a cougar or bobcat. I mean a small cat that might wear a collar and play with a ball of yarn on your floor.
The family that captured this footage lives in Lords Valley, Pennsylvania, which is in the Poconos. So, they have lots of bears come around their property. Their cats typically don't mind, simply ignoring bears that want to explore the yard.
But when the young bear from this video climbed on the deck, it woke up one of the family's sleeping cats. And the feline was not happy about it. Striking an aggressive pose and hissing like a pro, the cat was able to shoo the bear away.
Seriously impressive. Seems like everybody in the Poconos should have a guard cat like this to make sure no large animals get too close.
