VERDURE, San Juan County — A new fire blazed up Sunday south of Monticello, less than a mile away from homes.
The Verdure Creek Fire is on U.S. Forest Service land near the Blue Mountain Home subdivision of residences, Utah Fire Info said. The blaze was estimated to be more than 100 acres and growing.
Ground and air firefighting resources were reported to be en route to the blaze at approximately noon on Sunday. The Manti-La Sal National Forest includes the Abajo Mountains, also known as the Blue Mountains, in southeast Utah.
It is not yet known how the fire started.
It is not connected to other parts of the Manti-La Sal National Forest. The national forest offers five ranger districts across the forest, including Monticello and stretches into Colorado. This portion is connected to Dark Canyon Wilderness.
Tooele County
The Cherry Creek Fire was reported Sunday afternoon about three miles from Lofgreen in Tooele County. On Sunday night, it was estimated at more than 1,000 acres and is reaching into Juab County, according to Utah Fire Info.
Officials believe it was human-caused, but it remains under investigation as ground resources respond to the scene.
The Levan Fire Department said on social media to stay away from the growing wildfire which is near the Tintic Junction area and state Route 36.
Also burning, the Yellow Lake Fire is still going strong east of Heber City. The more than 30,000-acre fire was discovered on Sept. 28 and is 23% contained.
