OGDEN — No. 20 FCS Weber State found themselves back in the weekly rankings after a 55-48 win over No. 8 Montana last week.
While undefeated in conference play, the Wildcats welcomed a winless Northern Colorado team to Ogden, with a chance to move up in the rankings and to move to 3-0 in Big Sky play.
But the Bears had other plans for the Wildcats.
Northern Colorado earned their first win of the year, beating Weber State 21-17 on their home turf. Even more shocking, it was Northern Colorado's first win since Nov. 12, 2022, when they defeated Northern Arizona 21-20.
Weber State who has now lost back-to-back home games and will likely drop out of the rankings for the third time this season.
The Wildcats finished with 401 total yards of offense while giving up 323 to the Bears, but a fumble on the 8-yard line, and again on the 3-yard line, by quarterback Richie Muñoz left multiple points on the board, proving to be a difference maker in the loss. In all, Muñoz fumbled three times in the loss.
Weber State held a 14-7 lead in the second half and even extended it to 17-7 before Muñoz fumbled for the third time, allowing the Bears to set up shop with a short field.
The Bears put together an 18-play, 98-yard drive that took 8:38 off the clock to take what ended up being a game-winning 21-17 lead over the Wildcats.
But the story of the game closed its book on Weber after the fourth fumble of the game by Terrance Caldwell, which made things grim for Weber State.
The Wildcats did get one more shot, but Muñoz threw an interception to end the game.
The Wildcats will look to right the ship versus Sacramento State next week at the Hornets on Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. MDT.
The Bears and Ed Lamb will look to win back-to-back games for the first time since Sept. 2022 against Montana.
