More is expected from a four-door sedan than ever before. As tastes have changed, many of these vehicles have struggled to find relevance in a world that is being filled with trucks and crossovers.
It's this market that's pushed manufacturers like Kia to set new standards. This year, the company unveiled their new K4 model — a car that's been crafted to provide drivers with a dynamic experience.
"The all-new K4 advances Kia's commitment to deliver sporty sedans with advanced technology and elevated performance," said Steven Center in a press statement, COO and EVP of Kia America. "Succeeding in the compact segment means overdelivering on the features that customers want, and the K4 is designed to exceed expectations."
Now available at dealerships like Young Kia in Layton, drivers have been able to explore what the new model features. Here are three things that stand out in the Kia K4:
Bold design
Though the K4 is powered by an internal combustion engine, the vehicle features several EV-like attributes. Following Kia's "Opposites United" design direction, the sedan has vertically oriented LED headlights and taillights — which Kia says take inspiration from their flagship EV9. The 18-inch alloy wheels also feature a unique blade pattern to elevate the car's look.
"It's impossible to ignore the impact EV's have had on how we look at today's vehicles," said Dallin Breshears, Young Kia's general manager. "I think what Kia perfectly captured in the look of the K4 is the identity of the modern sedan — both for gas and electric cars."
Digital cockpit
The K4's dynamic exterior acts almost as a reflection of what's inside the vehicle. As soon as they enter the sedan, driver's are greeted by comfortable seats, perforated pedals and a nearly 30 inch digital cockpit system.
Compatible with Apple CarPlay and Wireless Android Auto, the touchscreen display has hands-free voice control capabilities. Kia is also expected to equip the vehicle with their first-ever AI assistant later this year.
"This system goes beyond what most modern vehicles are capable of doing," said Breshears. "I think a lot of drivers will be surprised with how much technology like this makes the driving experience more convenient and enjoyable"
On-road performance
Featuring a four-cylinder engine and Macpherson struts, Kia designed the K4 to be sporty and efficient. It's capable of producing over 140 horsepower, achieving 39 miles per gallon on the highway and completing a full curb-to-curb turn in less than 36 feet.
While these specs show how accommodating the vehicle is, what sets the K4's on-road experience apart is the vehicle's advanced technological capabilities. Driver's are provided with auto emergency braking, rear cross-traffic assistance and blind-spot collision warning services. The K4 is also expected to receive parking sensor and adaptive cruise control capabilities soon as well.
"Most four-door sedan owners really love how easy their vehicle is to drive," said Breshears. "The K4 makes the commuting experience incredibly seamless. It's a vehicle that a driver can step in after a few years and still love how it accelerates and handles."
Kia will also be releasing two K4's that cater to drivers who are looking for more power. Part of the GT-line, the GT and GT-Turbo will be equipped with 18-inch wheels, paddle shifters and multi-link rear suspension systems. The Turbo model will also feature a 1.6 L engine that's capable of delivering 190 horsepower.
"Kia's notorious for making cars that put the driver first and adapt to anyone," Breshears said. "I'm confident that the K4 will become an era-defining car for this decade."
