SALT LAKE CITY — Under the warm evening skies of Ute Field, the University of Utah faced off against Grand Canyon in a tightly contested match that ended in a 1-1 draw Thursday night.

Both teams entered the field with determination, but neither could secure the win, resulting in a match full of tension, opportunities, and, ultimately, shared frustration.

The Utes, fresh off a 2-1 victory over Gonzaga, came into the game looking to continue their momentum as new members of the Big 12. Utah was up against a powerful opponent in Grand Canyon, a team with two WAC championships and two NCAA appearances in the last four years.

"We are really excited to show teams who we are this year," Utah midfielder Lilliah Blum said. "Obviously, we don't have that big of a name. We are ranked pretty low, and we are ready to prove people wrong and show them what we have to bring."

The match began with Grand Canyon in possession, but it didn't take long for the Utes to impose themselves. Just eight minutes in, Blum, a sophomore who was a constant offensive threat throughout the game, found forward Taliana Kaufusi with a perfectly placed assist.

Kaufusi made no mistake, heading the ball into the back of the net to give Utah an early 1-0 lead. The crowd at Ute Field erupted in cheers, sensing that the home team was in control.

Grand Canyon, however, refused to quit.

Although the Antelopes managed just one shot on goal all night, goalkeeper Deaira Jackson's resilience kept Grand Canyon in the game. Jackson made five crucial saves, frustrating Utah's attempts to extend their lead.

The Utes, despite their dominance in terms of possession and opportunities, struggled to convert their chances.

As the second half began and the sun fell behind the mountains, the intensity on the field ramped up. Grand Canyon found a moment of brilliance in the 70th minute when Madison Hamm launched a powerful shot from distance, catching Utah's goalkeeper Kasey Wardle off guard and leveling the score at 1-1.

The Antelope fans, who had traveled to support their team, roared with approval as their team found a way back into the match.

Despite their overwhelming control of the game, the Utes couldn't find a second goal. Head coach Hideki Nakada didn't hide his disappointment after the final whistle.

"I am a little disappointed in my team tonight from the fact that we had nine shots on goal and they had one," Nakada said. "We are coming off the field tied 1-1, it is very disappointing. I think we are a very good team when we play together, and I don't think we did that enough tonight."

The Utes, with 13 returning players and 12 newcomers, are still finding their rhythm, and Thursday night's game served as a learning experience.

For Grand Canyon, the draw was a hard-earned result that they will use to build on as they prepare to face Little Rock next week. The Utes will seek to bounce back from the disappointment of a draw and refocus their efforts as they take on in-state rival Utah State Wednesday.
