OGDEN — In a thrilling matchup between Idaho and Weber State, the Wildcats fended off a late comeback attempt by the fourth-ranked Vandals to secure a narrow 31-29 victory Saturday.
Adrian Cormier took over in the third quarter and showcased his prowess by rushing for a crucial 13-yard touchdown, propelling the Wildcats to a 28-21 lead. Kyle Thompson later drilled a 27-yard field goal in the fourth quarter in what ended up being the game-winning score.
"We had a lot of guys step up and make big plays when they needed to," Weber State head coach Mickey Mental said.
Weber State faced an initial setback, trailing by 10 points early in the second quarter, and forced into a catch-up scenario.
The turnaround began with Kris Jackson, who penetrated the Vandals defense with a 1-yard run for a touchdown. Jackson continued to shine on the next possession, rushing for 3 yards for a score to take a 14-13 lead for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats opened up the passing game in the third quarter, where Richie Munoz initiated a pivotal play with a 39-yard pass to Treyshun Hurry to set Weber State on the 4-yard line. Munoz later connected with Jacob Sharp for a 6-yard touchdown, extending the Wildcats' lead to 8 points.
The Vandals retaliated, however, and Nick Romano reeled off three consecutive runs, culminating in a 4-yard touchdown run to narrow the gap to 2 points.
On the Vandals' final drive, Gevani McKoy's pass was intercepted by Wildcats' Jalon Rock, though the possession was retained due to a personal foul committed by Weber State's Naseme Colvin.
Munoz completed 10-of-18 passes for 152 yards, with Treyshun Hurry contributing 46 receiving yards. Winston Reid tallied an impressive 17 total tackles in the win.
