OREM — Panguitch's girl's volleyball team won the 1A state championship after sweeping Rich 3-0 Saturday in Orem.
As the No.1 seed in the 1A tournament, Panguitch came to conquer, and that's exactly what they did in the championship game against Rich in a 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 win.
The first set was a neck-and-neck battle between the Bobcats and Rebels, with scores tied at 3-3, 5-5 and 7-7 before Panguitch pulled away. Panguitch broke the trend and went on a 3-0 scoring run, which set up perfectly to take a 6-point lead at 14-8. That momentum carried the Bobcats to take the set 25-21.
Set two started out similar with a tied game at 3-3, but Rich had a different idea and came out swinging. Rich managed a 6-point lead on the Bobcats at 14-8. But the Rebels' lead didn't last long as Panguitch proceeded to go on a 6-0 scoring run of its own to tie the game again at 14-14. The Bobcats' scoring run continued for another 3 points until the set closed out on another 25-21 win.
The Rebels did everything they could to take down Panguitch in the third set and managed six tied scores. It seemed to be either team's set until the Bobcats pulled away one final time to secure a 5-point lead on Rich. With the lead, Panguitch soared to victory with a 25-16 win and a 3-0 match win for the championship.
