SANDY — In a déjà vu scenario from 2021, the 3A girls' soccer state championship featured a rematch between the Ogden Tigers and the Morgan Trojans, both vying for the coveted title.
The Ogden Tigers secured their second state championship in three years with a convincing 3-1 victory, mirroring their previous triumph against the Trojans.
"I'm proud of this group," Ogden coach Ryan Robinson said. "They're tenacious."
These two fierce rivals from Region 13 clashed twice earlier in the season, with the Tigers emerging victorious on both occasions.
The first half of the game remained predominantly scoreless, but the Tigers broke the deadlock in the final minute and a half. Maya Robinson, a standout for the Tigers, expertly found the back of the net from the goal line, securing the only goal in the first half.
During the initial 40 minutes, the Tigers' offense managed to launch five shots on goal while successfully thwarting the Trojans' offensive attempts.
As the second half began, the Tigers wasted no time in continuing their offensive dominance. Within the first seven minutes, Kate Pulley and Bella Grey unleashed their skills. Pulley, positioned on the left side of the box, notched the Tigers' second goal, with Grey contributing to the assist. Shortly after, the roles reversed as Grey fired a shot that deflected off Morgan's keeper, Mya Turner, and found its way into the net.
Despite falling behind 3-0, the Trojans displayed resilience and determination.
With 30 minutes remaining in the match, Morgan's Macy Burton lined up an impressive 40-yard free kick that eluded the Ogden keeper's grasp, putting the Trojans on the scoreboard. Remarkably, this free kick was Morgan's sole shot on goal throughout the game.
However, the Trojans' second-half goal proved insufficient to overcome their formidable opponents, as the Tigers cruised to victory and claimed the 2023 3A state championship.
