LAYTON — Two teams entered Friday night's game seeking their first win of the season, and it was Farmington that went home with the honor after a 43-21 win over Layton.
Both teams got off to a slow start, but it was the Phoenix who got on the board first off a made 40-yard field goal attempt from senior Drew Romney. The Phoenix offense converted on three third downs on the drive, but were forced to settle with the field goal.
Farmington's defense then went to work and allowed only 2 yards on Layton's next possession to force a punt. And Farmington was off to the races.
With 36 seconds left in the first quarter, Farmington's specials teams added to the night and managed an 86-yard punt return to give the Phoenix a 9-0 lead going into the second frame (the ensuing PAT missed).
Early in the second quarter, the Lancers were able to get into a groove as quarterback Madden Sargent found sophomore wide receiver Teiyon Halbasch on a 34-yard pass to put the ball on Farmington's 1-yard line. On the next play, Sargent found the end zone with a 1-yard run to give the Lancers their first score of the night.
The touchdown run by the Lancers didn't put a halt to the Phoenix offense, though, and the visiting team scored on their next possession on a 7-yard run from Lucas Peterson to take a 16-7 lead at halftime.
Coming out of the locker room, Farmington kept their foot on the gas. Just two minutes into the second half and three plays later, Easton Wight launched a pass downfield to Jake Metcalf for a 20-yard touchdown.
Layton's Sargent was able to get into the end zone one more time with a minute remaining in the third quarter, but, again, the Phoenix had a response. Farmington added to its lead with two more scores in the fourth quarter, including another one from star running back Lucas Peterson, who finished the night with four touchdowns.
Farmington will go back home on the Sept. 29 to continue region play against Weber, while Layton will stay home to take on Davis.
