SALT LAKE CITY — Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square has canceled its summer concerts event, typically held for Pioneer Day in July.

But despite the cancelation, the choir did announce some exciting news Friday: Auditions to join the award-winning group are slated to resume in June.

"We are looking forward to not only singing together in the future, but welcoming new members into our ranks," Choir President Ron Jarrett said in a news release.

In August 2020, the last three phases of the audition process were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Applicants who had completed the first of four phases in the process will join the successful first phase 2021 applicants to complete the remaining three phases this year.

Applications to audition for the 2022 season open June 1 and close on Aug. 15. To join the choir, applicants must be members in good standing of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, between 25 and 55 years old, and live within 100 miles of the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City.

"The audition process is an exciting part of the continuing progress of the choir," said music director Mack Wilberg. "We always look forward to meeting those who want to represent the church by using their musical talent and serve with us in this unique way."

The four audition phases span over nine months and require a skills assessment test, in-person audition, and mandatory attendance at Choir School for four months.

In a typical year, choir members rehearse for about six hours weekly and participate in 75 schedule performances annually.
