ST. GEORGE — A Salt Lake City man accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Santa Clara, Washington County, on Valentine's Day in 2021 appeared for sentencing last week — an attack the judge called "brutal" and "vicious."

On July 8, the defendant, 34-year-old Gabriel Newland Dutson, appeared at 5th District Court for sentencing on first-degree felony object rape and second-degree felony aggravated assault.

The case was filed following a report of a woman who was sexually assaulted in her Santa Clara home on Feb. 14, 2021. The suspect, identified as Dutson, fled the area shortly before officers arrived, as previously reported by St. George News.

Dutson was sentenced to serve five years to life on the object rape charge and between zero to five years for aggravated assault. He was sentenced to serve one year in jail on an assault by a prisoner charge. All sentences were ordered to run concurrently.
