THE WATER'S EDGE – I've only seen brown bear cubs on one occasion. My dad and I were fishing on a river in a remote part of Alaska, when suddenly we heard a squealing sound. I looked behind me and there were three adorable cubs scurrying up a tree.
Uh oh. I'm no bear expert, but I knew that brown bears will send their cubs up trees for protection when they sense danger. And if the mama was feeling threatened by us, things could get dicey real fast.
As a precaution, my dad and I waded out into the river a ways. We could hear the mama grunting in the bushes near the water's edge. She thrashed around a bit, seeming to send the message that if we came anywhere near the cubs she'd teach us a painful lesson.
So we swam across the river and quickly vacated the area.
The cubs in this video are just as cute as the ones I saw that day in Alaska, and thankfully, the scene is less dangerous. Check it out.
I guess this is what you would call a piggy-bear ride. And it just reinforces how attentive these mama bears are to their cubs.
"As the sow and three cubs waited on a high sand bar a little too long, the high tide flooded them with water and the only way back to the beach was to get on mom's back and go," explains the caption. "Cubs fall off and the mother bear was a bit sensitive with cubs on her back, so one cub did have to swim across and made it just fine!"
According to the description, this video was taken earlier this summer in Alaska's Katmai National Park. Seems like the bears there are just as maternal as the one that I encountered all those years ago in Glacier Bay.
