CHARGING THE MOUND — New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso was asked during MLB All-Star media day on Monday what rule he would change in baseball, and the 30-year-old veteran came prepared.
"I don't think people should get ejected after charging the mound or fighting," Alonso told Yahoo Sports. "I think it should be one-v-one, hockey style. You should be able to charge ... and if they don't want to fight, they take a knee."
In hockey, players take off their gloves to signal their intention to fight and each player involved receives a five-minute penalty. If a player leaves the bench to join the fight, however, they are automatically ejected from the game.
Alonso seemed to agree with this framework, insisting that teams would not be involved in his proposed one-on-one fights because "that's when people can get seriously hurt."
What do you think? Is an automatic ejection too harsh for a little tussle on the mound?
