BLUFF, San Juan County — A man died after he was overtaken by river currents while recreating near the Utah-Arizona border.

On Sunday afternoon, a 50-year-old man from Kayenta, Arizona, was "overtaken by river currents" downstream of Paiute Farms Wash in the San Juan River, near Clay Hills in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

Navajo Nation police led a search and recovery effort for the man, who is presumed to have drowned, a statement from Glen Canyon National Recreation Area said. The man's identity has not been released.

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is urgently reminding park visitors to be aware of moving water, "as currents can be deceptively strong," the statement said.
