From Helicopter to 1,000-Foot Rappel: Up Lake Adventures Pushes Limits at Lake Powell

Save Story

What began as a bold idea turned into one of the most ambitious single-day adventures we've ever attempted in Southern Utah.

In this episode of KSL Outdoors, we set out from Page, Arizona, combining multiple extreme experiences into one continuous journey. The day starts with a helicopter flight over Lake Powell and Glen Canyon, offering sweeping views of the region's iconic red rock formations, including Tower Butte.

After landing inside Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument we transition to off-road travel, navigating rugged terrain in UTVs for more than two hours to reach a remote cliffside location high above Lake Powell. There, with guidance from professional outfitters, we attempt a never-been-done-before, three-pitch rappel spanning around 1,000 vertical feet. It's the largest descent any of us (even the guides) had ever completed!

At the base of the cliff, a support boat awaits, allowing us to continue the adventure on the water with a swim and a bass fishing excursion before returning to Page to complete the full loop, all within a single day.

The expedition also served as a test run for a new guided experience offered by Up Lake Adventures, designed to give adventure-seekers a chance to combine aerial, off-road, and technical rappelling into one coordinated trip.

The result: a rare look at the scale, beauty, and adrenaline-filled possibilities that Lake Powell and Glen Canyon has to offer.
