Fly fishing Lees Ferry without a guide: Can we catch anything?

Save Story

Estimated read time: Less than a minute

Lees Ferry, a world-renowned stretch of the Colorado River just below Glen Canyon Dam, draws anglers from across the country for its scenic beauty and large rainbow trout. But while the fishing can be exceptional, it's also known for being highly technical, leading many to rely on experienced guides.

Instead of going the traditional route, we set out to see what happens when you take on Lees Ferry without one.

Launching a rental boat near Lake Powell, we travel upriver toward the dam and drift back through some of the river's most promising water. Along the way, we stop at sandbars and shallow runs, trying to unlock the patterns that make this fishery so challenging.

Without local knowledge or guidance, every decision matters—and every missed opportunity raises the stakes.

Is hiring a guide truly essential at Lees Ferry, or can determined anglers find success on their own? This trip puts that question to the test on one of the Colorado River's most iconic sections.

If you do need a guide service, we recommend Lees Ferry Anglers out of Marble Canyon, AZ.
