President Dallin H. Oaks — Closing remarks

President Dallin H. Oaks concluded the 196th Annual General Conference by inviting people to concentrate their worship, focus their learning, and to unite their testimonies on the teachings of Jesus Christ.President Oaks invited people to act on the messages of the conference.He encouraged people to minister to others, one by one, in love.President Oaks invited people to demonstrate the pure love of Christ with all others, including family members, communities, neighbors and those we interact with.Members should treasure up and act on the messages of the conference, he said, and by so doing they will be blessed with heavenly instruction."The Lord will continue to teach and inspire us with personal revelation and guidance."

Elder Gerrit W. Gong — Abide with me, 'tis eventide

On the first Easter, when Jesus Christ was resurrected, he appeared three times, according to scriptural accounts: to Mary Magdalene, to two followers on the road to Emmaus and to 11 in a room where he showed his hands and his feet to prove who he was, taught Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles.Each time, Jesus wasn't immediately recognized. But each time, he revealed what Elder Gong called a "covenant pattern" of following his teachings."As we walk by faith in him, abiding in him, and him in us," he said, "we come to know he lives. His Easter promises are real."

Other church meetings include solemn assemblies, like the one that began this weekend's general conference, which marked "significant church milestones or events, such as the sustaining of a new church president," he said.

Elder Taniela B. Wakolo — Come unto Christ, together

Elder Taniela B. Wakolo, general authority seventy, told stories of some who waited for their family members to join the church, including his wife, who waited eight years for him to be baptized.He said his only regret is not being baptized sooner. Elder Wakolo said it is never too late for miracles."Brothers and sisters, God keeps his promises — but in his timing. These stories are not about statistics. They are about souls," he said.

They know the tears, the prayers, and the patience. … These things remind us that conversion is personal. Timing is individual. Agency is sacred," Elder Wakolo said.Prophets teach clearly, he said, and used stop signs as examples of ways even simple messages can be made clearer."Because of Jesus Christ and his Atonement, all can receive the gift of eternal life — which includes living in God's presence eternally as families," he said.Temples are a symbol of hope, and sealings invite members to "the divine order of God."

Elder Quentin L. Cook — Keys, covenants and Easter

Elder Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught that the prophet Elijah committed to Joseph Smith "the priesthood keys pertaining to the sealing power to bind sacred ordinances and covenants on earth and in heaven. This includes the vicarious ordinances of salvation and exaltation that must be performed here on earth in the temples of the Lord."Elder Cook went on to say that these priesthood keys, restored by Elijah, are central to the purpose of the earth's creation."Without these keys, there are no eternal families and the whole earth would be utterly wasted," Elder Cook said.He shared some experiences of visiting the area of Jerusalem with Elder Jeffery R. Holland."Can you imagine how it felt for two former missionary companions, then serving as apostles … to walk where Jesus walked, to read from the sacred scriptures of the last days of his mortal ministry, and feel of the spirit of those miraculous events?"

Elder Neil L. Andersen — Eternal marriage is an eternal journeyLike many of the previous leaders speaking this Easter weekend, Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles also spoke on the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. But he then focused on the Resurrection's impact on the sealing power in the church to "bind families together forever."The sealing power is most commonly offered in the church's temples, where men and women are bound together in marriage for time and eternity."As we increase our love for the Savior, our love for each other grows," Elder Andersen said. "Like our own discipleship, our eternal marriage is not a short-term experiment but a journey, an eternal journey of becoming who God desires us to become."

There are circumstances where divorce should be considered, Elder Andersen said."But the cautions are significant," he added."Eternal marriage is an eternal journey," Elder Andersen finished. President Susan H. Porter – "Here am I, send me"

In her final address as Primary general president, President Susan H. Porter taught young children about Heavenly Father's plan of salvation. She said his older children could listen, too."You were born with gifts, you have a purpose and you have the ability to make a difference for good," she said.Heavenly Father wants each of his children to have his blessings and sent Christ to help them."Heavenly Father sent Jesus to Earth. He showed us how to live to be happy. He taught us how to love God and love others," President Porter said.

She said that as they keep the commandments to love God and others, he will help them grow."Wake up each day with purpose and confidence, knowing that Jesus will walk with you," President Porter said.She encouraged Primary children to follow the example of Jesus Christ by saying, "Here am I, send me," and to listen afterward for what God wants them to do."He can help you stand for truth so you can bring his light to others."President Porter said a young boy gave Jesus five loaves of bread and two fish, which fed thousands of people. She said Heavenly Father can provide miracles when children offer what they have, sharing examples of children around the world.

Elder Aaron T. Hall — "I glory in my Jesus"

Elder Aaron T. Hall, of the Seventy, spoke about having a loving connection with Jesus Christ. Elder Hall explained that the name of Jesus Christ became more personal to the Book of Mormon prophet Nephi.Elder Hall told conferencegoers how Nephi proclaimed a firm declaration of trust in God. In addition to Nephi, the missionary Ammon joyfully declared the glory of the Lord and that his joy was full in the Lord."I glory in our lawgiver. His commandments guide and protect us. His covenants bind us to him — so he can transform, save and exalt all who choose him," Elder Hall said.Nephi's and Ammon's words filled his own soul with gratitude. Elder Hall also shared the impact of the forgiveness, healing and works of Jesus Christ."And our Savior willingly experienced all mortal pains and infirmities that he would know how to strengthen us in our afflictions," Elder Hall said.At the close of his message, Elder Hall invited all listeners to "glory in Jesus Christ."

Elder Chi Hong (Sam) Wong — Remember, "Remember, remember"

Elder Chi Hong "Sam" Wong, of the Seventy, shared five instances in which the words "remember, remember" appear in the Book of Mormon. They included the following:

We can dwell with God in a state of never-ending happiness if we keep his commandments.

We will be cut off from God's presence if we do not keep his commandments.

We can only be saved through the atoning blood of Jesus Christ.

We will not fall if we build our foundation upon Jesus Christ.

We were given knowledge and agency to choose and act wisely.

These five cases of "remember" help Latter-day Saints to remember Jesus Christ and his teachings, which are especially memorable during the Easter season."Keeping God's commandments is a blessing, both temporal and spiritual," Elder Wong said.But what if people don't keep his commandments?The Book of Mormon teaches that men are "cut off" from the presence of God when they don't keep the commandments.Elder Wong quoted President Dallin H. Oaks, comparing the commandments of God to the string of a kite: "If we lose our hold on the string, the kite will not rise higher. It will be carried about by these winds and inevitably crash to the earth."Jesus Christ is the "heart of God's plan of salvation and exaltation," he added."Without Jesus Christ, there is no salvation, no victory over sin and death, and no path back to our Heavenly Father," Elder Wong said. "He is the very foundation of the whole plan of salvation and exaltation."

President D. Todd Christofferson — The character of Christ

President D. Todd Christofferson, second counselor in the First Presidency, encouraged members to become like Christ to prepare the world for his Second Coming."Acquiring the character of Christ is one of the most important ways we take his name upon us," he said.In addition to considering Christ's attributes, President Christofferson said members should consider his motivation, including his thoughts, desires and intent.

He said both have the same outcome."The good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ is that we, each of us, can call on the grace of Jesus Christ to help us. With our baptism and confirmation, he promises us the companionship of the Holy Ghost, the messenger of his grace," he said.He listed three desires of Christ's heart that he encouraged members to adopt in their own minds: charity, the passion to lift others and build their happiness, and his desire to glorify God.These desires lead to the development of the attributes of Christ."With faith in Christ, we can pray that the Holy Spirit will effect a mighty change in us to instill these same divine motivations in our hearts and help us practice the attributes of a Christlike character," he said.He said that developing the character of Christ not only prepares individuals but also the world for Christ's return and millennial reign.
