ST. GEORGE — Work to transform 700 East in downtown St. George into a part of an urban trail system is well underway.
Plans to add an urban trail and traffic-calming measures to 700 East have been in the books since before March 2021, when the city of St. George hosted a cycling event that turned the east side of the road into a two-lane bike trail.
Currently, 700 East, also known as University Avenue, has traffic cones running from 700 South to St. George Boulevard. Roadwork currently underway and scheduled for the near future focuses on median installation, road striping, bulb outs (curb extensions) and landscaping.
"They've already done the road surfacing portion of it," Cameron Cutler, public works director for the city of St. George, recently told St. George News. "They still need to get the stripping down. As you see, construction on 700 East now, they're putting in a median. It's more of a buffer median between the vehicle travel lanes and the urban trail."
That trail, located on the east side of the road, is designed to accommodate both cyclists and pedestrians safely. The median will include landscaping between 600 South and 100 South, with a concrete buffer extending farther north. However, it will stop short of St. George Boulevard to avoid interfering with the intersection and traffic signals.
