ST. GEORGE — Drug task force agents raided a suspected psilocybin mushroom lab in Iron County on Wednesday and arrested a 45-year-old man on related drug and weapons charges.

Matthew Joseph Metcalf was booked into Iron County Jail on suspicion of one dozen felony counts, including operation of a clandestine laboratory, a first-degree felony; five counts of prohibited conduct involving a firearm, each a second-degree felony; five counts of distribution of a controlled substance, each a third-degree felony; and one count of endangerment of a child or vulnerable adult, a third-degree felony.

According to the probable cause statement filed in support of Metcalf's arrest, agents with the Iron-Beaver-Garfield Narcotics Task Force have been investigating Metcalf's alleged illegal activities over the past few months.

Using information obtained from a seized cellphone via a warrant, agents said they found evidence and photographs indicating Metcalf was cultivating and selling psilocybin mushrooms, commonly called "magic mushrooms," in addition to dealing other drugs.
