ST. GEORGE — Shane B. Smeed formally started his tenure as Utah Tech University's 19th president on May 1. The last several weeks have been busy, as he participated in campus ceremonies and helped to prepare a contentious financial proposal for the state government.

Smeed also faces the long-term goals of building strong community relationships to provide ample opportunities for students, while trying to be inviting to those worried that the university has strayed from its roots.

St. George News previously shared a detailed report on the university's presidential candidates, including Smeed prior to his selection, and he recently provided further details on his personal life and his goals for the university's future.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to get to know our community," he said while speaking to St. George News earlier this week.
