ST. GEORGE — Citizens and community leaders gathered at the corner of 1000 East and Red Hills Parkway in St. George on Thursday afternoon as Switchpoint Community Resource Center broke ground on an expansion and remodeling project for its affordable housing location, The Point.

The location will be adding 66 one-bedroom apartments, bringing the total to 110 housing units for homeless people, including older adults and veterans, in need of a place to live.

Speakers at the groundbreaking event included Switchpoint CEO Carol Hollowell, who said the expansion is only possible because of help from many different people and groups.

"We believe that stabilization and self-reliance begins with having a home," Hollowell said. "By building community, we belong, and we belong to a tribe. This is an amazing moment for our community and especially for our residents. I am really overwhelmed with gratitude for all the people that have come together to make this happen."

Switchpoint board member David Dangerfield asked everyone to consider the sense of self-esteem the new location would give those in need of help and a place to stay. He said that the day's rainy weather and the thought of the 110 souls residing in units provided by Switchpoint reminded him of a quote attributed to the author Williams Faulkner.

"William Faulkner said, 'How often have I lain under raindrops falling on a strange roof,'" Dangerfield said.
