WOLF CREEK, Weber County — Two people were injured in a box truck crash on Powder Mountain Road Thursday afternoon. The crash also forced the roadway to be shut down for at least an hour.
The driver of the truck somehow lost control of the vehicle near 5300 N. Powder Mountain Road (state Route 158), drove off the right shoulder of the road and crashed into the side of the mountain, according to a statement from the Weber County Sheriff's Office.
The two occupants of the vehicle were ejected through the front windshield and thrown about 20 to 30 feet, Weber Fire District deputy chief David Reed said.
One of those occupants was transported to the hospital via helicopter and was in critical condition, according to the sheriff's office. The second person was also injured, but Reed said those injuries were not as serious; that person was taken to the hospital via ambulance.
In May 2024, Utah Department of Transportation officials announced that the steep road to Powder Mountain, the site of two fatal motor vehicle crashes since 2018 stemming from brake failure, would be getting a runaway truck ramp.
According to UDOT's website, the ramp is expected to be completed this summer.
While the investigation into Thursday's crash is ongoing, Reed noted that it was possibly due to brake failure. He said witnesses told emergency responders they smelled brake smoke, though that information hasn't been confirmed.
"It's one of, if not the steepest road we manage in all of Region 1," UDOT spokesman Mitch Shaw said when the runaway truck ramp was announced.
