LEEDS, Washington County — A teenage hiker fell from a trail and suffered injuries at the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve near Leeds on Monday. Members of the Washington County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team were sent to the area to locate the girl.

The incident occurred around 4:40 p.m. when a 17-year-old girl fell approximately 20 feet while hiking on the Red Reef trail. Washington County deputy Jacob Paul told St. George News the teen may have injuries to her spine and an ankle, as well as lacerations on her hands.

The girl had been hiking alone and called 911 for help, which prompted the search and rescue response, Paul said.

The search and rescue team was able to locate the girl, but due to the terrain and the potential seriousness of her injuries, responders called in the Star 9 helicopter from the Utah Department of Public Safety to hoist her out. Once out, the girl was taken to a staging area where she was examined by responders and then taken to St. George Regional Hospital by ambulance.
