Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals is chasing the NHL career goals record of 894 held by Wayne Gretzky. Ovechkin entered the season 42 goals short of breaking a record that long seemed unapproachable. The 39-year-old Ovechkin was on pace to get to 895 sometime in February before injuring his left leg in the Capitals' most recent game at Utah. With 15 goals in 18 games, he now has 868 and is 27 away from passing Gretzky. The team says Ovechkin is expected to miss four to six weeks with a broken left leg.
