SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City police on Monday released the identities of three people who died in two unrelated shooting investigations over the weekend.
On Friday, about 11:40 p.m., officers responded to a report of shots fired near 1045 E. 2100 South, by the Natural Grocers and Quarters Arcade Bar. Investigators learned that there was an argument among several people.
During the argument, Oscar Moreno, 26, is believed to have shot a 38-year-old man. In response, a 30-year-old man shot and killed Moreno, according to police. The 38-year-old man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition but was reported to be "stable."
Several people were detained and questioned by police. But, "after conducting multiple interviews with involved parties and witnesses, detectives released all individuals detained as part of the investigation," the department stated on Monday.
Police say information will be turned over to the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office, which will decide if the shooting of Moreno was legally justified self-defense.
The second shooting happened just before midnight on Friday near Liberty Park.
Maxwell Rodgers, 21, was found shot to death outside an apartment near 800 S. Park Street, police stated. Police said that after shooting Rodgers, Charlie Andrew Warre Poulsen, 53, went back into his apartment.
A SWAT team and crisis negotiators worked for several hours to try and get Poulsen to surrender. When the SWAT team finally entered the apartment, they found Poulsen deceased by suicide, police stated.
Police say Poulsen and Rodgers lived in the same apartment complex but had an ongoing dispute.
According to court records, Poulsen was charged on July 22 with causing property damage, a class A misdemeanor. In that case, Poulsen "came down and began hitting (Rodgers') window AC unit with something, and broke the unit. Rodgers reported it would cost $623 to replace," according to charging documents,
A warrant was issued for Poulsen's arrest in that case on Aug. 27 for failing to show up to a scheduled court hearing, according to court documents, and was still outstanding Friday.
