ST. GEORGE — A St. George 911 dispatcher and a St. George police officer were recognized for life-saving efforts in two near-fatal incidents that occurred during off-duty hours when both were in the right place at the right time.

A conference room at the St. George Police Department was standing room only last week as St. George Police Chief Kyle Whitehead presented the department's Life Saving Award to two recipients. The first to Jenessa Thornton, an emergency dispatcher at St. George Emergency Consolidated Communications Center.

On the morning of April 27, Thornton was running in the Washington City 5K when she noticed another participant stumble and fall onto the race path, Whitehead said.

The man she helped, Fred Bernhardt, was in the audience on Thursday and said he was running when he blacked out and fell, with Thornton running directly behind him.
