RIVERTON — A major intersection in Riverton will soon close for a year while the Utah Department of Transportation constructs a freeway-style interchange.
Starting Friday night, east and westbound travel at 13400 South and Bangerter Highway will begin to close while crews prepare to work on a new traffic configuration.
Lane closures and traffic delays will occur over the weekend and by Monday, a full east/west closure will be in place. No eastbound or westbound traffic will be allowed through the intersection on 13400 South.
The southbound continuous flow intersection turn lane for eastbound traffic will be permanently closed. The northbound turn lane for westbound traffic onto 13400 South will still be open, as well as right-on and right-off access to and from Bangerter.
Besides the northbound turn lane light, all other lights will be removed from the intersection, UDOT said.
The closure is expected to last through fall of 2025. Detour routes will be available via 12600 South, Old Liberty Way and 3600 West.
UDOT crews will be using the empty space on Mountain View Corridor between 12600 South and 13400 South as a storage site for the Bangerter project.
"Activities at this site could include material hauling and storage, recycled concrete crushing operations, machinery storage and other construction needs as necessary," the department said.
UDOT said recycling concrete to be used on Bangerter Highway is an "innovative transportation solution" that is "fiscally responsible" and reduces construction waste in landfills.
In preparation for this road work, UDOT crews removed the pedestrian bridges at 13400 South and 2700 West.
The construction project will likely increase noise, dust and vibration for nearby residents, and a majority of the activity will be conducted during the day, UDOT said. Motorists are advised to expect lane shifts, traffic delays and reduced speed limits throughout the construction work zone.
